In January 2010, my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. I was 30 years old and prior to that day in 2010 had not yet thought much about losing a parent. I had lost loved ones in the past, some who’d lived long lives, and some who left us too soon; however, I had not grappled with the thought or chance that I may lose one of my parents. At the time, my mother was 51 years old. In March 2010, my wife and I learned that my father-in-law had been diagnosed with bladder cancer. For her and me each to have a parent battling cancer was horrifying. My father-in-law lost his battle with cancer on November, 27, 2013, the day before Thanksgiving. To see your spouse, your best friend, lose a parent to this horrible disease was gut wrenching. When he died, our daughter was two years old and we were pregnant with our son. I have known and had close relationships with three of my grandparents. My heart aches when I’m reminded that my children will miss out on knowing the wonderful man who (along with my mother-in-law, who is thankfully still with us!) raised their mother.
Since this time, an aunt and several friends have been diagnosed with breast cancer or other forms of cancer. Cancer knows no boundary, be it age, gender, socio-economic status, or geographic location.
In January 2019 we celebrated my mother being a survivor. This year she will be 60 years old! As we celebrate the victories of people who’ve won their battles with cancer, we realize that some of the victories are due to early detection and many were due to advanced medical treatments. All of these victories have been impacted by research and awareness.
Strong will alone cannot beat cancer. Awareness, early detection, and research are all required in order to beat cancer. The Susan G. Komen organization is leading the charge to have a real impact against breast cancer. Please join me in supporting this organization. I’m doing it for my mother, my wife, and my daughter.
