Why are you participating?
Arika kicked off her career as a TV Station Intern and to this day she’s never forgot the value and importance of internship programs. It was because of the sparks that were generated during those exciting weeks that she was hooked on pursuing a career in Media. Over the 30 years that career has taken her through sales, sales management, and general management roles in media. This has led her and her husband Rod from West Virginia to Ohio, to South Carolina, to North Carolina, to Florida, to Indiana and then to Virginia.
In 2009, Arika became a Nexstar Broadcasting’s VP General Manager in West Palm Beach Florida managing 4 TV stations and a community web portal. After 3 years, in West Palm, Arika and her husband moved to Evansville, Indiana with Nexstar to lead the talented team at the market’s ABC Station, CW Station and community Web Portal. Two years ago Arika and Rod asked to move to the Roanoke Valley to join the WFXR and WWCW team to be a part of the exciting community expansion and growth of WFXR News and WWCW. Their move to Virginia was also like moving home, as Arika grew up in Bridgeport, WV and is a WVU Mountaineer.
Although Arika has been a media person and a community advocate for the last 30 years, she and her CPA husband will tell you that their most passionate roles have been being mom and dad to their 25-year old son Jamie, who is a 3rd year medical student in Greenville, SC.
Arika believes that one of the many blessings to working for Nexstar Media and working with the team at WFXR, WWCW and VirginiaFirst.com is the passionate way they support the local community and wonderful local community organizations. Arika has always been passionate about serving the community and working with the teams to utilize the different station tools and digital tools to highlight organizations and to help organizations grow. She personally became involved in Susan G. Komen while in Evansville, Indiana, and she has had a special place in her heart for SGK that’s in large due to 2 very dear friends, who are survivors and could be considered inspiration to us all.
“It is not what we see and touch or that which others do for us which makes us happy; it is that which we think and feel and do, first for the other fellow and then for ourselves.” ~ Helen Keller
