Over the past few years, I have been blessed to have found my “tribe”. You know…the people who will always pick you up after you fall- after they have laughed at you, of course. After the birth of my son, I fell into a deep depression that left me with an inability to see any joy in life. I had no will to do anything. I was angry a lot. When I wasn’t angry, I was crying…or yelling…or cursing…or waiting for bedtime. I was a mess.
Enter my tribe! This remarkable group of ladies somehow managed to put up with me. They stuck with me for 5 YEARS as I began to rebuild myself. They put up with all of the bad in hope that they would see the good again.
Now what does my tribe have to do with a 15 mile walk for breast cancer?
Why am I doing this?
Am I a glutton for punishment?
Do I enjoy blisters on my feet the size of dinner plates?
When it all comes down to it, I’m doing this because I’m selfish.
See, two members of my tribe have been diagnosed with breast cancer. One has won her fight, the other is still fighting. The thought of being without these ladies is enough to bring me to tears. Anything that I can do to keep them here with me for a long time, I’m going to do. These ladies helped bring me back from the brink. The least I can do is walk a few miles for them.
Komen on the Creeper is the most recent effort by our local Susan G. Komen Affiliate—Komen Virginia Blue Ridge, to rally people together from across Southwest Virginia to join the fight against breast cancer in our community and beyond. I want to make an impact in the fight against breast cancer and I need your help. Please consider making a tax-deductible donation today in support of my fundraising efforts.
Your support helps us get one step closer to a world without breast cancer. 75 percent of the money raised through Komen on the Creeper stays in the community to fund local breast cancer education, screening and treatment programs. The remaining 25 percent supports groundbreaking breast cancer research.
Together, we are fueling the best science, boldest community and biggest impact in the fight against breast cancer. And we will not stop until this disease is gone forever. That's our promise. Will you please join me in this fight by making a donation today?
